Under the hood
Slack Water hosts five Kindling Pools on one domain: this year’s, last year’s, and three smaller ones for sessions, crew and rides. Here is how the badge asks, how a Pool outlives the weekend, every setting and file, and what the v0.1 schema cannot say yet.
In plain words
When you buy a ticket you may tick a box and give your page’s address. Only then does the festival office submit it to the Pool §5.2. The request is emailed to the address on your page, and the code on your badge opens the same request’s page. Answering asks you to sign in with that email or account, because the first time a page joins any Pool its email is verified §4.2. No box, no request, and a blank badge back.
The festival’s own Pool is universal-opt-in: anyone at the festival may say yes. Session Players and Rides Home are too. Crew and Volunteers is curator-only-adds: only the coordinators propose, after a shift, and each person still says yes §3.2 §5.4. All five are public, so any client can read them, and all five are in our discovery file §8.3.
Each year’s Pool opens with two curators: the festival office and a volunteer. After the weekend the office moves primary to the volunteer and steps back. If the volunteer ever stops, co-curators listed in the manifest are first in line §9.3.
Slack Water 2025 had no volunteer keeper. Ninety days after its last curation action it entered dormant, in its manifest and in our discovery file §9.1 §10.2. Members got a notice, and a 14-day transition window opened §9.3. If it fails, the Pool archives: readable, listed, and closed to new requests and messages §9.4.
We set no Pool minimum for senders §3.3. Each person’s page says who may write to them §7.2: Seb, for example, takes messages only from people in a Pool with him. Both block lists apply to everyone, in every Pool §7.3.
Tickets pay for the festival. Nothing at the connection layer is charged for §1.3: nobody pays to be in a Pool, to be introduced, or to be shown first.

Honest limits
Where the specification text and a schema disagree, our JSON follows the schema. These are the gaps that touch Slack Water. The first six are about events that end.
A manifest has created_at and updated_at §3.3, and nothing for the dates of the thing the Pool is about. Slack Water 2026 says “28 to 30 August” in its charter and its governance text. A client reading the JSON cannot tell that the festival is over, or sort Pools by when they happen.
Slack Water 2025 and 2026 are two unrelated files to a client. We mark returning people ourselves, by comparing the Kindling identities in both files. There is no field for “this Pool follows that one”.
Dormancy counts curation actions §9.1. Rides Home will go dormant each winter and archive, and must be revived by reopening a transition §9.4. It cannot say “asleep until next August”; the reason lives in its charter.
The only mark on a curator is primary. That Birdie keeps the Pool “until next year’s opens”, and that Marit is listed but inactive, is prose. §9.3 puts co-curators first in line, but when there are several, nothing orders them.
Dormancy notices, nominations, support and blocks have no message type §6.3. We send them as system messages, and count active members §9.2 and the two-thirds rule §9.3 ourselves. Another host could not read our tally.
A rule looks only at tags, a minimum curator level and a visibility §5.5. Seb’s rule for slack-water + festival also fits a stranger’s public Pool with the same tags. The notice and the undo are the only protection.
A handshake request carries accept_url and decline_url §5.2. The spec does not say that following one must prove who you are. Our badge opens a page that asks the owner to sign in, because a badge can be dropped; a bare accept link on a badge would let anyone who found it say yes.
§5.2 says the 14-day window is “configurable per Pool”. There is no field, so each request carries it in expires_at. We use the default.
§4.5 names email-verified, oauth-verified, curator-vouched and unverified. The schemas say email, oauth, curator-vouched, unverified and cryptographic, and a curator can only be email, oauth or cryptographic. Our JSON follows the schemas; our pages use the words.
§6.3 lists handshake-request, handshake-response, intro and reply. The schema adds withdrawal and system, which is what our leaving, handover and dormancy messages use.
§6.2 calls the Pool reference pool_ref; the schema calls it via_pool. §12.1 names kindling_version; every schema uses schema_version. §10.2 names pool_url and a per-Pool curator_contact; the well-known schema uses manifest_url, with one contact on operator. Our JSON follows the schemas.
§2.3 names extraction_source, but the parsed-profile schema has no such field and forbids extra ones. A badge on our wall cannot say which lines were marked up and which were inferred.
